Rumble and Shake - Dustin Myers
Seeing a massive arm silently stop upon colliding with the ground is probably one of the most anti-climatic thing you will ever see. Seeing exploding spheres fall from the sky and quietly explode without fanfare is just boring. So how do we liven it up? The boss has an issue in that when he attacks, it has a lot of flare and buildup, and no reward. His silent assault on the player leaves much to be desired, and is overall just not that interesting. What is more, his heavy attack has a large range for damage now, but his arm is too small to have done it! That was the most important issue, so I went to tackle that one first.
In a lot of games, when there is a heavy slam attack, or an area of effect attack, there are usually effects done to the ground to accompany it. One I remember from games I have played in the past is seeing the ground spike up around the impact zone, like spikes lashing out at the player. So I got to work setting up a bunch of cones under the map. With a lot of testing, I finally got the timing right, but it still wasn't enough to really hone in the danger. So next came some camera shake.
Camera shake can be tricky to set up as well, you have to create a shake from scratch, and really research how it is set up. World Camera Shake is what I ended up using to deploy it, as it doesn't need the player's camera plugged into it manually. Next was learning that there was an inner radius of immunity one could set up with it, that I had accidently turned way up. Think of a donut. The wider the inner radius, the wider the hole in the middle. If you stand in the hole, you don't get any camera shake. So I figured that out, and set it to zero. Then I had to relearn the importance of getting world location over regular location (See my post on teleporters!). After all was said and done, the boss threw his arm down with a massive thud, a pitched down version of a discarded footstep sound, shaking the entire arena as spikes flew out from the impact. After applying similar treatment to the falling projectiles from his light attack, the boss now feels like a real threat, and a worthy foe!
